This was how the myth of Black criminality started, for the record. After the abolition of slavery, a lot of states made laws targeting Black people specifically, and then put them on chain gangs to get free labor from them.

Oh, and the US is still disproportionately incarcerating Black people and private prisons are making huge amounts off them.

California cop fatally shoots 18-year-old special needs woman after family calls for medical help

A California family says that a call to 911 to get medical assistance for an 18-year-old family member with special needs ended in tragedy when police showed up instead and killed her.

Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt told KNTV that San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports that a violent female suspect was thought to be armed in Half Moon Bay.

“Deputies arrived on scene,” Rosenblatt explained to KRON. “Shortly thereafter, there was a confrontation where the deputy was in fear for his life and as a result he fired his weapon.”

Tiny Serrano, who said that the woman was his sister, identified her as 18-year-old Yanira Serrano.

The brother, however, told a different story about events that led up to Yanira Serrano’s death.

Tiny Serrano said that his family called 911 hoping that paramedics would come to provide medical assistance because his sister had special needs, and she had not been taking her medication. He admitted that she may have had a knife.

The family had called paramedics for assistance before, so they were shocked when deputies showed up and fatally shot Yanira Serrano.

“She has special needs, and we just want answers,” the brother remarked. “Who are we supposed to call now when we need help when who is supposed to help us is killing our kids?”

“Why didn’t they use a Taser?” Tiny Serrano asked KNTV. “We just want to know what really happened.”

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office placed the deputy on administrative leave while detectives and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office completed an investigation.

SAN ANTONIO — Photos leaked Thursday from a U.S. Border Patrol facility in the Rio Grande Valley show overflowing holding facilities of immigrants, many of whom are children.

The photos have a timestamp of May 27, 2014.

i can’t really elaborate on this because i haven’t read the comic but i’d say maybe be a little wary of the movie b/c it … probably won’t be much better, disappointingly.

Don’t you know that slavery was outlawed?”
“No,” the guard said, “you’re wrong. Slavery was outlawed with the exception of prisons. Slavery is legal in prisons.”
I looked it up and sure enough, she was right. The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution says:
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
Well, that explained a lot of things. That explained why jails and prisons all over the country are filled to the brim with Black and Third World people, why so many Black people can’t find a job on the streets and are forced to survive the best way they know how. Once you’re in prison, there are plenty of jobs, and, if you don’t want to work, they beat you up and throw you in a hole. If every state had to pay workers to do the jobs prisoners are forced to do, the salaries would amount to billions… Prisons are a profitable business. They are a way of legally perpetuating slavery. In every state more and more prisons are being built and even more are on the drawing board. Who are they for? They certainly aren’t planning to put white people in them. Prisons are part of this government’s genocidal war against Black and Third World people.

The term “gypsy” is actually a non-preferred and derogatory term (slur) for Roma people. The slur assumes that the Romani came from Egypt, which is not true. For those of you who aren’t aware of anti-Roma bigotry, the Roma are an indigenous people whom originated in northern India 1,000 years ago who continue to be pushed from nation to nation and mistreated. They are frequently denied legal status and social services and often suffer from poorer health status than that of the general population and other marginalized groups within the UK and the US. Up to 220,000 - 500,000 Romani were slaughtered in the Holocaust, though a definite estimation can not be determined.
There are many stereotypes about the Roma, but the most predominant is that they are all gazing into a crystal ball, reading palms and tea leaves or divining the future with a deck of Tarot cards and that they’re all sociopathic drifters who steal children and anything else that isn’t tied down.
Please don’t continue to use this slur in ignorance.

PSA: It may seem kinda cool how someone presenting feminine with a full beard just won Eurovision but Conchita Wurst is not positive trans representations. She is a drag queen and also racist. Her name is a dick joke roughly translating to “The Virgin Mary’s Sausage” and she got her name first known by participating on an Austrian reality show called “wild girls” where she with a group of other white Austrians had to “survive with a native tribe in the deserts of Nambia”. Also, she is intended to be Colombian, according to Tom Neuwirth, the white austrian cis gay man who “plays” Conchita Wurst. So he is a white guy from Europe dressing up as Colombian.

Her beard is not a cool violation of the gender binary but rather is intended to be humorous. Tom Neuwirth refers to her as “The Bearded Lady.” Who is an “Art Figure” and “A statement, it’s not appearances that count, but what’s on the inside.” The section of Tom/Conchita’s website titled “Tolerance” only includes links to websites as “The Homosexual Initiative” and websites about HIV awaresness. She makes no efforts to promote tolerance towards trans folk, who face violence for visibly existing outside the gender binary during their daily lives not as a performance but as how they present to make themselves comfortable.

Her presense on Eurovision resulted in several transphobic jokes such as Austria’s correspondant for voting, a cis woman, wearing a “hillarious” fake beard and many other correspondants making beard-comments and beard gestures when announcing their votes for Conchita. She was referred to as “The Queen of Austria” and after she won “The Queen of Europe.” While it’s not a hardset case that she won because people thought the very idea of her was a funny joke, it looks enough like that for it to make me, as a trans feminine genderqueer person, uncomfortable. News media either calls her a “transvestite” or “drag queen.” When it comes to acceptance of her, all of the discourse is about acceptance of gay folk and no mentions are made of trans people. Because the purpose of Conchita Wurst as a “statement” is not to promote tolerance for trans women but to use them as the butt of a joke to unite cis straight people and cis gay people.

When Conchita was first announced as Austria’s representative to Eurovision I was initially excited when I saw how she presented on stage but I have done extensive research and as much as I wished there was some Austrian cultural context that was being lost in translation, Conchita Wurst cannot be interpretted as anything positive for trans people.

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/eurovision-2014-twitter-in-praise-of-transvestite-conchita-wursts-performance-for-austria-9350030.html (this article is not a source of accurate information but rather an example of the media not handling this in an informed and helpful way)

PLEASE stop reblogging this post. Parts of it are true, but most of it is either highly exaggerated or just plain wrong.

  1. Yes, Conchita Wurst is a drag queen.
  2. No, Tom Neuwirth is not cis. They describe themself as “somewhere between male and female”. I think part of the confusion regarding Tom Neuwirth’s gender might be because there simply aren’t any gender neutral pronouns in German. So he (?) uses *male* pronouns in German and I’ve looked around but couldn’t actually find any sources regarding their (?) pronouns in English. This doesn’t make them cis.
  3. Conchita Wurst is not a dick joke and I honestly don’t know why you’d think that? She got the name “Conchita” from a Cuban friend and the name “Wurst” comes from the expression “das ist Wurst” which translates to “it doesn’t matter”, as in “it doesn’t matter where one come from or what one looks like”. “Wurst” does mean “sausage” in German, but I don’t know any German speaker who’d think of a penis when they hear that word. Just like the word “Schwanz” is German slang for penis, but the English word “tail” (the literal translation) is not.
  4. She got her name way before participating in that TV show. Of course, the whole premise of the TV show itself is disgustingly racist. It’s a huge disappointed that she decided to participate and I’m not trying to make excuses for that. (just like the part about her being Colombian) At least the show received a huge backlash and was cancelled after a little over a month.
  5. Her beard is NOT intended to be humorous, it absolutely IS a violation of the binary. “Bearded Lady” is not an offensive term in German, and that might be an issue with the translation. She IS a statement, a statement for tolerance and acceptance regardless of gender, appearance, or place of origin. She was created as a catalyst for discussions about terms like “normal” and “different”, to make people think and question. I fail to see the problem with that tbh.
  6. Her efforts might focus on promoting tolerance and acceptance for homosexual people, but every time this comes up in an interview she makes a point to emphasise that EVERYONE should be treated with respect, regardless of what makes them *different* from others.
  7. This next part is frankly disgusting. You are saying that she somehow CAUSED transphobic comments? You are blaming HER for daring to EXIST in the presence of transphobes? Really?

You are allowed to feel about her any way you want, sure - but please, don’t spread this kind of misinformation. She deserves better.
